Aomine stood - with his arms crossed over his chest - near the front doors of the DMV. It was noon, and the heat from outside, along with what little AC the building had to offer, was causing the entire office to turn into a life-sized oven. Aomine felt a bead of sweat trickle down his back and hoped that it didn't stain the light blue fabric of his uniform. The last thing he wanted was to look like a slob in front of hundreds of civilians (although there were people who were sweating A LOT more than he was).

When Aomine graduated from the police academy, he never pictured himself working in a place like the DMV. He got good grades on tests and excelled in training, nearly placing in the top fifty graduates. Once he got a job at the local police station, he expected to drive around in a squad car and take part in high-speed chases or bank robberies. Instead, the Chief instructed that he work at the DMV nine hours a day, seven days a week. The DMV saw no action, and all Aomine really wanted to see was action.

The line shuffled forward, and Aomine watched as a girl stepped into the building.

Aomine had to blink a few times to make sure he wasn't hallucinating. He couldn't find words to describe her; there were a lot of girls out there that Aomine found attractive, but none of them made his heart stop and jaw slack like she did. Aomine cleared his throat and averted his gaze before anyone - especially her - caught him staring.

Aomine kept his eyes on her every once in a while, trying to figure out what she was here for. She was sitting alone, probably playing Flappy Bird or some other game on her phone. If she was alone, that meant she was eighteen or over, which meant she was here to either get her license or renew it.

"G805. Please report to window number ten. G805. Please report to window number ten."

She stood and proceeded to walk towards a desk that was located behind Aomine. He wished he could turn around and continue to watch her, but that would've been too much of a risk to take (Aomine did not want to have an infamous reputation in the office, or in the police force, for that matter).

Before he knew it, she was passing by him, her head hung low as she exited the office. Aomine raised a brow, but decided not to question what had happened.

He was still mulling over the fact that he would never see her again.

Or so he thought.

It was 8 AM the next day, and Aomine had just opened the doors to the DMV. He held the door open and greeted everyone who entered. The line came to halt as the office began to fill, and Aomine was met with a familiar face.

"Good morning." Aomine had never felt more self-conscious in his entire life than he did now. He desperately wanted to wipe his face and fix the collar of his uniform, but at the same time he didn't want to look like he was trying to impress her (although he really did want to impress her).

"Morning." She smiled. Aomine felt like he was going to die. "Can I ask you a question?"

"Of course," Aomine had to keep his composure. "What is it?"

"I was wondering, about the permit test...How many questions can you miss to pass? I thought it was ten, and I missed ten yesterday, but somehow I still failed."

Aomine smirked. "You can only miss eight to pass."

She buried her head in her hands. "Oh God, I'm an idiot."

"You here to take it again?"

She nodded. "Yeah. Hopefully I pass this time."

"Good luck."

The line shuffled forward, and soon, she was nearly out of sight. He felt himself relax against the door; his heart was slowing down to a more healthy speed and his cheeks were cooling down to a more healthy temperature. Aomine shook his head slightly, and continued to greet people as they entered.

Aomine was standing at his post inside when she emerged from the testing room. There was a long slip of paper in her hand - most likely the test - and stapled to it was another sheet of paper. She started walking towards the doors; her head hung low yet again. Aomine had the urge to ask if she passed or failed - even though he well knew she failed - just for the sake of speaking to her again before she left.

"Have a nice day." He said as she past him.

"You too." She nodded before disappearing into the parking lot.

The next day, Aomine was surprised she was nowhere to be found.

Saturday came along, and Aomine had not seen her since. Although he missed her, he shrugged it off, knowing that he'd get over her sooner or later. As he was about to leave the police station to take his post at the DMV, someone tapped his shoulder, grabbing his attention.

"Kise?"

Kise Ryouta graduated first in the police academy, and was the Chief's favorite - everyone considered him the Chief's right-hand man. Although Kise was a nice guy, Aomine envied the privileges he got; on his first day, Kise was allowed to take a squad car out and roam the streets. Just thinking about it made Aomine's eye twitch.

"The Chief wanted me to let you know that you're roaming the Lantern District today. Eight to six."

Aomine froze. "What?"

Kise tossed him a set of keys. "Take patrol car six today."

"What about the DMV?"

"The Chief has someone else covering it."

Aomine felt like a little kid at the candy store. His chest swelled as he jumped into patrol car six - which was a Dodge Charger instead of an old, rundown Crown Victoria. He started up the engine and took off.

The Lanter District was know for its crowds and narrow streets, but that didn't stop Aomine from enjoying every second of it. Just being outside was enough for him.

After roaming the streets for a couple of hours, Aomine decided to grab something small to eat. He parked the Charger right in front of a doughnut shop and killed the engine. He made sure his radio was on and set on the right station, then made sure he had enough change for himself. Just as he opened the car door, the car parked in front of him reversed right into the Charger.

He groaned. He set his police siren off, and the lights set atop the Charger began to flash red and blue. He climbed out of the car and quickly inspected the damage. Fortunately, the Charger had a protective brace built onto the front bumper, which left the Charger damage-free, however, the civilian's car didn't look too good - the back bumper was bent inward and the right brake light was smashed.

The driver's window rolled down as Aomine approached it.

"License and-"

Aomine froze. The familiar face met him with an anxious smile.

"Sorry about that, officer."

"No need to apologize. Accidents happen all the time," Aomine said in hopes to reassure her. "But you're still getting a ticket. License and registration, please."

She sighed, her head hanging low as she reached over for the papers in the glove box. She handed them to him and waited. Aomine brought them back to the Charger and began inspecting, making sure she was a legal and safe driver. As he shuffled through her papers (the first thing he searched for was her birthday and age, and was relieved to find she was indeed old enough for him), he realized she hadn't given him a license, but a learner's permit instead. He checked the date on the permit and noticed it had expired in November.

That was four months ago.

Aomine rolled his eyes. This girl was a handful. He grabbed a ticket and clipboard out of his glove box before returning to her window.

She spoke before Aomine could.

"You're the officer at the DMV, right?"

Aomine nodded. "You know your permit has-"

"It's so good to see you! I'm assuming you've been promoted from your post?"

"Your permit has expired." As much as Aomine wanted to talk to her (and talk about how great it is to be free from the DMV), he was on duty and he couldn't let some girl (who made his heart race, no doubt about it) distract him.

Her shoulder visibly fell. "I know, I know..."

"You'll get a ticket for backing up into a police car and for driving on an expired permit. Is that clear?"

She looked up at him - her eyes glassy and wide, and her lips curled into a small frown. Her bottom lip began to quiver, and Aomine had a feint idea of what she was trying to do. He couldn't let her get to him, especially when he was trying to lay down the law.

"Are you doing that on purpose or are you really going to cry?" Aomine quipped. He finished filling out the first ticket and moved on to the next one.

"Both," With that a tear slid down the edge of her cheek to the very tip of her chin. Aomine had the urge to reach out and stroke it away - oh God, he felt his composure slowly falling apart. He couldn't let her do this to him; he couldn't let himself fall for it. She just somewhat admitted to crying on purpose, didn't she?

Aomine sighed. "If I told you I thought you were pretty, would that make you feel better?"

She hesitated. "....Do you really think so?"

Aomine smirked as he handed her the two tickets, although he felt as if his heart was going to stop. "Maybe."

She nodded slowly as she took the tickets out of his hand.

"Now, I suggest that you call a tow truck since driving with a broken brake light could get you another ticket, but I'm about to go get a doughnut, so I'll be out of sight and-"

"Would you want to get a doughnut together?"

Aomine was taken aback. "You really want to grab a doughnut with the man who just gave you two tickets?"

"Of course, Officer Daiki." Aomine enjoyed the way she said his name.

"I'm on duty, so I can't really affiliate myself with people I know - but, if you just so happened to walk in the same time as I did, I think we could consider that a coincidence. I'm just going to go put this clipboard back in the car."

Aomine threw the clipboard inside the Charger, turned the siren lights off, and made way towards the doughnut shop door. She was inside already; her eyes scanning the various selection of doughnuts and pastries. He stood next to her and ordered a maple bar. She decided on ordering a chocolate glazed doughnut with sprinkles.

"Together?" The cashier asked.

"Yes."

"No."

She glared at Aomine, and Aomine glared back. Aomine pulled out some change and handed it to the cashier before she could protest.

"Don't you already have other things to pay for?" Aomine quipped. She elbowed him in the hip - causing him to grunt - before taking a seat at a table by the window. Aomine sat across from her and picked at his doughnut quietly. He could sense she was uneasy by the way she wouldn't look at him or make conversation. Aomine opened his mouth to ask if anything was wrong, but she beat him to it.

"You're probably judging me, aren't you?" She sighed and dropped her head. "I'm a terrible driver, I know."

Aomine chuckled. "I actually wasn't, but since you brought it up-"

"No! I don't want to talk about it!" She shook her head. "Not in front of you."

"Well, you pretty much showed me first-hand what kind of driver you are."

"You like picking on people, don't you?" Although she sneered, her lips turned upwards into a smile. Aomine could feel his heart pounding against his rib cage.

It wasn't long before Aomine had to return to the Charger and roam the district again. She decided to stay inside and call for a tow truck, but before parting, she said,

"Wait, Officer Daiki-" She stood and walked towards the cash register. She grabbed something - Aomine didn't know what - and returned to him.

"I hope we could see each other again-" She took his hand (they were so soft and elegant and Aomine was swooning) and began scribbling across his palm. Once she was done, she smiled. "-Officer Daiki."

He was back to roaming the streets in the Charger, still mulling over what had just happened in the doughnut shop. He hadn't checked what she had written on his palm yet; he was in too much of a trance to do so.  Before he knew it, it was 6 PM, and Aomine had to return the Charger and call it a day. In the police station's locker room, he changed out of his uniform and into a casual white sweater and black pants. As he collected his things and shut his locker door, the scribbles on his palm caught his eye. He opened up his hand.

Across his palm was a ten-digit number. Her number.
